Travel Outfits: Comfortable and Stylish Options

I know I am guilty of throwing on a t-shirt and some leggings to head to the airport. However I am planning a trip to Japan this spring, and want to look somewhat stylish when I get off the plane in Tokyo. Not to mention it’s not common for women to wear leggings outside of the gym in Japan. So I have been on the hunt for comfortable and stylish travel outfits.

Now sitting on a plane for 12+ hours can make anyone antsy. So I for one want to be comfortable. So to plan an airport travel outfit I consider the following. For more tips on what to pack check out my ideas for your travel first aid kit, and also carry on luggage vs. checked luggage here.

Slip On Shoes:

  • Slip on shoes work best to get through the security line easily and without having to tie and untie your shoes.
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Wear socks, there is nothing more gross than realizing that you don’t have socks on to go through security.
  • No heels. Unless you are flying for a work trip and need to wear business dress I would avoid high heels at all costs.

Limit Jewelry/Belts:

  • Jewelry and belts can be a pain to take on and off when going through security.
  • I just wear my wedding ring on the day of travel and save my jewelry for on vacation.
  • Wear clothes with an elastic band that are comfortable and don’t require a belt.

Comfortable Roomy Clothes:

  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes. The changes in cabin pressure on the plane can cause bloating and leg swelling. Suddenly those tight jeans aren’t as cute when you are bloated and they are cutting into your belly.
  • Bring a pair of compression socks to wear on the plane. This not only helps to prevent DVTs ( Blood clots in your legs) but it helps with the swelling that can accompany flying

Dress In Layers

  • Planes tend to be either too hot or too cold, never just right. Bring layers with you, such as a cardigan or zip up sweat shirt
  • Consider bringing a large scarf, that you can wrap around yourself if you get cold. I have a 100% linen scarf that I like because linen can do double duty. It is lightweight and breathable but also gives some warmth.

Travel Outfit Ideas:

  1. Ekouaer Lounge Set– This set is cozy and stylish. The pants are loose but still have a bit of extra style to them with the pleating. The top is a nice knit fabric and is short sleeved, so I can layer over it on the plane, and remove when I arrive at my destination. The fabric is a nice weight and not see through at all, and most importantly these are soft and comfortable
  1. Ekouaer Womens Jogger Set– This set is more of a jogger style bottom. This is nice because your pants won’t touch the floor when using the airplane restroom. This set is loose and flowy in a nice knit material. The pants and ankles are not tight so they won’t restrict blood flow on a long flight. I have this in the neutral colors seen below and so it looks put together but still comfortable
  1. Anrabess Lounge Set– This is a dupe of the Spanx air essentials sweatsuit set, for half the price. The top is slightly cropped and the pants are loose. The material is soft and the black set looks more elevated than your regular sweatsuit set. My husband thinks this is a really cute looking set, I would wear this for winter, early spring or late fall travel. This would also be super cute for camping.
  1. Tanming Sweater Set– This adorable set is comfy and stylish. I like to wear elevated neutrals, so when I found this I knew I had to have it. This is loose and flowy and can be paired with a cardigan for chilly flights.
  1. Stelle Womens High Waist jogger– These joggers are made out of mostly cotton, so they are breathable and soft. I like the loose jogger style of pants so that my pants don’t accidentally touch the airport or airplane bathroom floors. You do want to make sure that the elastic around the ankles isn’t too tight. Because the jogger style can ride up your calf as you sit on the plane and cut off circulation if too tight. This pair is loose enough that it won’t do that.
  2. Merino Wool T-Shirt– Pair the joggers above with a Merino Wool shirt. Merino wool is temperature regulating, doesn’t get stinky or wrinkle. If you match colors in the t-shirt and joggers, this will look like a more put together outfit. I own both in black. Bonus, this can double as a basic tee on your vacation because it won’t wrinkle or get smelly for several wears.

Happy Travels!
