Sugarhouse is a hip and walkable neighborhood in the Salt Lake City valley. Nestled about 15 minutes from downtown, it has an array of shops, with a variety of local shops smattered throughout.
I grew up in this neighborhood and have watched it go from small and local to much more developed with a large medical center built right across the street from the beautiful Sugarhouse Park.

Sugarhouse park was once the site of the Utah state prison, now it is a beautiful park with a lovely stream that runs through it down to a pond. The park offers walking, playgrounds and spots to sit and picnic. It is a popular place to walk, and go sledding in the winter. For date ideas in Salt Lake City, see here

I like to start my day off with a stroll in the park, with my coffee in hand. The park has nice playgrounds, pavillions and BBQ spots that you can rent out.

Sugarhouse has no shortage of cute and funky coffee shops. If you are hungry for breakfast, stop into Hruska’s Kolaches for a piping hot pastry stuffed with a variety of sweet or savory options.
For my coffee, I personally like Sugar House Coffee on 2011 South and 1100 East. I used to come here weekly to get a coffee here before my volunteer shifts at Best Friends Animal Society( a local animal rescue). Sugar house coffee sources local ingredients as well as offers vegan and gluten free food options.
Next I head over to The King’s English Bookstore, for a browse through the bookshelves. They feature some local authors and sell some locally made items inside a cute little building. This is a local and independent bookstore in the 15th South and 15th East area.
I remember coming here as a child and staring at the walls of books, fascinated. It seemed like a maze of books inside, I have always been an avid reader.
Next up, Reflections Salon for a trim from salon owner Kelley Mountford. This cute beauty salon is located in an old house on 1553 South 1100 East. The salon offers the typical hair services as well as esthetician services. I always spend a few hours here chatting away while my hair gets the royal treatment.

For Lunch check I’m headed to Feldman’s Deli, for the best reuben sandwich in the valley. I always ordered the Trisha sandwich, a turkey and swiss reuben that is so good. Also try their Matzo ball soup which is served with one very large steaming hot matzo ball nestled in a comforting chicken soup.

Across the street from Feldman’s Deli is my favorite plant nursery, Cactus and Tropicals. They offer fun classes at their 3 locations in the valley. From bonsai to seed starting, to yoga in the plants. I always stock up on spring flowers for my porch here.

Cactus and Tropicals has a variety of tropical plants, orchids, and indoor plants as well as outdoor plants during the spring and summer.
It is a great place to get a high end looking pot for your plants, either indoor or outdoor

Stop into local boutique store, Hip and Humble, which sells a variety of local goods, not mass marketed ones. This is a great spot to get a gift for your friends and family back home. They have a variety of home goods and clothing items.
By now you must be getting thirsty. Head over to Tea Zaanti

Tea Zaanti has a dog friendly patio, and also serves foods and wines, with a focus on community. Their focus is on local and sustainable products, with options for those of you with dietary restrictions. They do have vegetarian/vegan and gluten free options on their menu.
After a refreshing iced tea or coffee, I head over to the Patagonia Outlet. I’m looking for some spring hiking gear. I like Patagonia’s clothes for hiking and camping and bonus they support environmental activism.
When in the area I love to go to Harbor Seafood and Steak for a nice dinner. They have their seafood flown in daily and use locally sourced meats. They have fun takes on classic seafood and steak dishes. Dine out on the grapevine draped patio during the warmer months. On date nights we will share oysters and king crab legs with their yummy and cheesy potatoes au gratin.
