I love getting outside with my dog, Ernie. He loves it too. Join me as we discover dog friendly locations throughout the Salt Lake Valley.
Hikes:
The canyons surrounding the Salt Lake valley are part of the watershed of the city, so dogs aren’t allowed up them. So where can you take your dog for a hike?
You won’t have to look far. There are plenty of areas near the city that allow dogs on trails.
- Dog Lake: Millcreek Canyon
- This hike is up Millcreek canyon. The gate for the upper part of the canyon opens July 1st – November 1st each year. This is a 6 mile round trip hike to dog lake. The hike is moderate in difficulty and winds it’s way through the canyon to a beautiful lake where your doggos can swim and splash around.
- Millcreek canyon is OFF leash on odd numbered days and ON leash only on even numbered days. This is to provide mountain bikers access to the trails without the fear of running into loose dogs.
- This is also a beautiful canyon for a picnic with your pooch.
- There is a $5 fee that you pay as you exit the canyon.
- Bonneville Shoreline Trail
- This is a trail that will eventually be 280 miles long! The section of trail that I like to hike with Ernie is the Parleys Canyon to Draper section. This trail attempts to follow the old shoreline of the ancient Lake Bonneville.
- This section is 23 miles long, and we of course don’t hike it all at once. It is easy in areas and more moderate of a hike in other areas
- There are multiple points to access this trail. Check the website I have linked above for all the access points.
- Memory Grove Trail:
- Looking for a trail a little closer to the downtown area? Look no farther than Memory Grove Park. There is an easy 1.6mile trail leading through the park.
- On leash in the park, but there is an off leash area at the northern end of the park, in a canyon like area.
- Uinta Mountains:
- The Uinta Mountains are a bit of a drive outside of the Salt Lake Area. But dogs are allowed all over this mountain range. Campsites and hikes to hidden lakes are scattered throughout the Uinta Mountains.

- Taqueria 27:
- This is a local taqueria that has a few locations around the valley. I typically visit the Holladay location. The outdoor patio is dog friendly. Try their TOD (Taco of the Day) or try the pork belly taco. They also have a GOD (guacamole of the day) that is always delish.

Dog Parks
- Tanner Park:
- This is a regular park with a section that leads down to a creek, where dogs are allowed off leash. The trail leads along the creek with several areas for dogs to get in the water and play. The beginning of the trail is a little stinky with the smell of dog urine, but it quickly dissipates as you continue down the hill leading to the creek.

- Dayland Dog Park:
- This off leash park is located in the Draper area of Salt Lake City.
- The park is fenced in and has a separate area for large and for small dogs. There are hills, and grass and water for the dogs to play in.
- The park is closed Tuesdays until noon for regular maintenance.
- West Jordan Dog Park:
- 4.5 acres of off leash dog park for your buddy to enjoy.
- Fenced in areas for large and small dogs to be separated. They also have dog fountains and benches
- Willowcreek:
- Located in Park City, just east of Salt Lake City.
- 2.5 acres of fenced in area for your dog bud to run around off leash.
- There is a pond with a dock for dogs to jump off of and swim. There is an agility course and plenty of grass
