Oh Bermuda, Take me back. This small island just west of the US, in the Northwest Atlantic is one of the northernmost tropical reefs. We ventured here after learning how to scuba dive, to try out our new hobby. Bermuda was made famous back in the day with tales of the Bermuda Triangle, and airplanes getting lost. While there isn’t a lot of truth to those myths, there are a lot of shipwrecks in the area. These make for some pretty cool diving spots.

This island has a mild climate, but even so, we wore wetsuits while diving. The temperature of the water doesn’t warm up until later in the season.
We chose to rent a small VRBO.com rental house in a neighboorhood in the northern part of the island. From the backyard we listened to frogs and insects chirp while we sipped our after dinner drinks.
After our first day of diving, we were hooked. Because this was our first dive after getting open water certified, we chose to do a more shallow dive. This was the perfect beginner dive for us and the underwater scenery was magical.

We were hooked after the first dive, so we went ahead and booked two more dives for the next day. We only had about five days of vacation here and we wanted to make the most of it.
The next day we dove a shipwreck, which literally took my breath away. The site of the wreckage was impressive with the corals growing all over it. This dive was a bit more strenuous than the first one we did. The currents in the ocean gently tugged us around and after this dive we were glad to get back on the boat to rest and recharge before our next reef dive

The next dive, on a beautiful reef was my favorite of all the dives. We swam past huge fan corals the size of cars and swam through tunnels covered in all kinds of corals.

The next day we walked from our rental to the bus stop and took the local bus to The Swizzle Inn for lunch. This is home to the famous rum swizzle drink. Which we had to try, along with the Bermuda Fish Chowder. Everything was delicious. Just down the street from there was the entrance to some caves that we decided to go explore. Bermuda has a few of these underground caves around the island
This was an interesting tour, that took an hour or so. There is water that pools and seeps into the cave creating ponds underground. There is a nice walkway leading down and through the caves and a gift shop, of course, at the end.
Next we decided to visit some of the old forts that are located on the island.

There was also a dolphin sanctuary located nearby, where dolphins had protected access to the ocean.
We really wanted to get to the pink sand beach but we didn’t want to pay for a taxi to take us all the way there, and there wasn’t a good bus route that accessed the beach so we decided to skip it and visit a beach on the north end of the island near our rental.
There was one other person on the beach, and we enjoyed swimming in the turquoise water in relative peace and quiet.
At another beach nearby was a beach bar and restaurant where we got a quick dinner before deciding to take a dip. While snorkeling we found a lobster. We joked that he was lucky that we had already eaten dinner. But seriously…. I love a good lobster.
I absolutely loved how laid back Bermuda was, and how friendly all the locals were. The historical sites just added to the interest of the island.
All in All I would love to go back. If you want to read more tropical adventures check out our trip to Costa Rica. If you need help packing less or packing a carry on only, I’ve got you covered
